Youth Involvement Project Evaluation
ERS has recently been working on an evaluation of the Lawrence Weston Youth Involvement Project, known informally as Juicy Blitz. This five-year project is funded via the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities fund, and uses open access drop-in sessions to engage young people with structured learning opportunities.
The project, which operates out of a shop unit in the heart of the community, aims to enhance young people’s involvement in their local area, deepen their knowledge and awareness of personal health and enable them to develop a range of skills which will help to prepare them for adult life, such as team work, communication, problem-solving, ICT, literacy and numeracy.
The evaluation involved a comprehensive desk-based review of relevant documents and data (including material collected on participants’ achievements, for which a sampling approach was adopted owing to the large volume of material on file) and interviews with staff and local partners. Consultations with project participants were undertaken during a busy drop-in session, which was a very interesting experience! Whilst many participants gave thoughtful and considered responses, consultations did highlight some of the difficulties staff experienced in getting participants to articulate their learning. In light of these difficulties ERS had been asked in particular to comment and advise on project monitoring and evaluation systems.
